Outdoor enthusiasts across the United States have a wealth of places to recreate, in a variety of settings. Some prefer the serenity of a northern Minnesota lake, while others might favor a mountain hike in Colorado.
For me, the ideal spot is a secluded area that overlooks the Little Missouri River in southwestern North Dakota, nestled within an 1,800-acre parcel of federal Bureau of Land Management land. Here, I can unzip my tent and scan the landscape as I look for deer that hid among the mature cottonwoods lining the river.

North Dakota goose-management hunt kicks off Aug. 15

Fall doesn’t officially begin until Sept. 22, but hunters can dust off their layout blinds and get their waders wet with North Dakota’s Canada goose August management take/early September season set for Aug. 15 through Sept. 20.
From a hunter’s perspective, the booming Canada goose population is a dream come true. However, it’s a huge headache for some small-grain farmers who feel like they’re constantly on a wild goose chase, dealing with flocks of birds eating up their profits.
“Our breeding population estimate continues to go up and up and up,” said Mike Szymanski, North Dakota Game and Fish Department migratory game bird management supervisor.

Muskie stocking adding more trophy opportunities in North Dakota, and pheasant spring crowing counts are up statewide

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department continued its muskie-stocking program this past year, introducing both pure muskies and tiger muskies into three major systems: Lake Audubon, Lake Ashtabula, and the Garrison Diversion Canal Lakes, which include New Johns Lake, Heckers Lake, and East and West Park lakes.
Because muskies aren’t raised at federal hatcheries in North Dakota, the NDG&F sources them from states such as Iowa, South Dakota, and Wyoming.

North Dakota Game & Fish offers “Fish Challenge” to state’s anglers

North Dakota offers an abundance of fishing destinations suitable for both novices and seasoned anglers alike. To foster some friendly competition, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department recently commenced its third annual Fish Challenge, which began May 1 and continues through Aug. 15.
“We know walleyes are popular, but we were hoping to encourage anglers to explore different species and bodies of water to complete the challenges,” said Cayla Bendel, R3 coordinator for the NDG&F.

Decisions on CWD regulations forthcoming in North Dakota

North Dakota Game and Fish Department officials have forwarded their Chronic Wasting Disease Proclamation to Gov. Doug Burgum and have indicated a recommendation to lift baiting restrictions in deer hunting Unit 2B. This decision is in response to sampling goals being met and no positive CWD cases being found there.
The NDG&F enacted baiting restrictions in 2B in 2022 following the discovery of CWD in a white-tailed deer harvested near Climax, Minn., just a short distance from the North Dakota border.

Paddlefish-snagging season in North Dakota nears

Anglers are gearing up for the reopening of paddlefish-snagging season in northwestern North Dakota. The North Dakota Game and Fish Department announced the season will commence once again May 1.
The history of the American paddlefish dates back to when dinosaurs roamed the earth, with fossils dating back as far as 60 million years ago, found in the Missouri River basin near the Fort Peck Reservoir in Montana.

Duck hunting may be closed for another six months, but waterfowl hunters still have a reason to take to the water and fields with their shotguns. The Spring Light Goose Conservation Order offers an opportunity for waterfowlers to pursue snow geese, blue geese, and Ross’s geese in North Dakota now through May 12.
