Oil and gas drilling continues to come under public scrutiny in Ohio

Primary lease periods for oil and gas drilling in state parks and wildlife areas were extended from three to five years following action by the Ohio Oil & Gas Land Management Commission at its May 5 meeting.
One-time lease extensions went from six to eight years and will require an additional bonus payment to the state. Commissioners were complying with legislation (HB308) recently passed by the Ohio General Assembly that permits lease extensions.

Ohio fall turkey hunt set for October, but not without controversy over hen harvest

There will be a turkey hunting season in Ohio from Oct. 1 to Oct. 26 this coming fall. But the Ohio Wildlife Council vote to approve the season did not come without controversy.
Prior to that vote at the April 30 council meeting, the normally routine proceedings erupted in a dispute over whether or not hen turkeys should be spared in the fall harvest.

Ohio’s Grand Lake St. Marys will be stocked with saugeyes

Anglers who fish the waters of 13,500-acre Grand Lake St. Marys may hook 14-inch saugeye by summer 2026 if efforts by the Ohio Division of Wildlife go as planned.
The division intends to stock 135,000 sterile saugeye fingerlings in the lake in the coming months. An equal number will be stocked each spring for the next five years.

Buckeye sapling at Natural Resources Park marks Ohio State’s football championship

There’s a new Ohio Buckeye sapling in the Buckeye Grove in the Natural Resources Park at the Ohio Expo Center. And this one wasn’t planted by a governor.
Three members of the 2024 Ohio State University (OSU) football team planted the tree on April 24 to commemorate the team’s victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish that brought the national championship trophy to Columbus. Traditionally, buckeye trees in the grove are planted by Ohio’s governors to commemorate their terms in office.

Wild Ohio offering new podcast

The Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife recently debuted a new podcast – the Wild Ohio Podcast – with the goal of teaching a worldwide audience about what the agency does beyond regulating hunting and fishing in the state.
“It will show the great stuff we do that people don’t know about,” said Jordan Phillips, an outdoor skills program administrator for the division. “We will talk about hunting and fishing, but other things the division does, too.”

62 acres at Ohio’s Leesville Wildlife Area approved for drilling

More than 62 acres of Leesville Wildlife Area in Carroll County is now open to possible fracking, following action by the Ohio Oil and Gas Land Management Commission in late March.
Texas-based Encino Acquisition Partners submitted the only bid to extract minerals from beneath the parcel – located in Monroe Township, according to Theresa White, the commission’s chairman. That extraction will likely mean fracking – the controversial drilling method commonly used in Ohio.

Ohio proposal would crack down on the ginseng trade

Ohio’s ginseng dealers will face slightly tighter regulations if the state wildlife council approves new rules for buying the valuable plant. The vote will come at the council’s April 30 meeting.
Michele Horn, who oversees ginseng rule enforcement for the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife, said the dozen new rules are more of an update to existing regulations. That update is based on an administrative review of the “Operation Root of All Evil” undercover ginseng investigation.
