Jack Ammerman: In Michigan, we’re buying $20 licenses in a $25 world

First the Michigan Senate released its proposed budget for 2027. When the House released its proposal, Shannon Lott, Michigan DNR Natural Resources Deputy, did not seem encouraged about what it holds for the future of the department.
The budget picture didn’t get this way overnight.

Jack Ammerman: A $5 gamble can pay big dividends in Pure Michigan Hunt program

Thirty years ago, I was fortunate enough to draw a bear permit. That was the only year I’ve been able to hunt for bears.
I’ve never had the chance to hunt for an elk in Michigan and I’ve never had someone say, “Congratulations! Come pick up this shotgun and all this hunting and outdoor equipment that you just won!” That’s all going to change, sometime in the near future. I’m almost sure of it.

Commentary: Michigan United Conservation Clubs is on the ropes – can sportsmen really afford to walk away?

Michigan United Conservation Clubs – MUCC – is on the ropes. In a Feb. 27 announcement, MUCC indicated it is pausing its youth camp and magazines while dealing with financial issues.
“It’s tight right now,” board President Stephen Dey told Bridge Michigan.
Please understand this group of clubs and individuals is a perfect example of a true grassroots organization.

Jack Ammerman: March is the time for coyote hunters to whimper, not scream

Michigan’s changes to its coyote hunting and trapping season just arrived earlier this month.
After being pressured to close the season to hunters and trappers by those who wanted to see the predators have a chance to raise litters, constant pressure by the hunting and trapping community – especially the deer hunters – led to a “new” management/nuisance season being put in place.

Michigan’s ‘Omer Suckerfest’ is time for anglers to unite – and for white suckers to run

The man next to me, tending to a barrel smoker that was billowing smoke, handed me a piece of sucker on the end of a plastic fork – before I had even introduced myself.
That’s sucker season on the Rifle River. You don’t stay a stranger for long. Every spring, a stretch of river running through the small town of Omer, Michigan on US-23 becomes one of the state’s most underrated fishing destinations.

Sucker fishing event in Michigan disqualifies contending fish during weigh-in

An angler at the Omer Suckerfest was caught cheating by stuffing his fish with lead weights, according to event organizers.
Every spring, thousands of suckers swim inland from Lake Huron up Michigan rivers to spawn. Taking advantage of this migration, the Omer Suckerfest hosts anglers from all over Michigan in a 10-day event to catch the heaviest sucker.

Anglers gather for sucker run on the Rifle River in Michigan

Most years, towards the end of March and well into April, there are two migrations associated with the Rifle River in Omer, Mich. One of the migrations is the huge numbers of suckers that leave Lake Huron and head inland to spawn. The other migration is the vast volume of people who head to the town of Omer to fish for those suckers.
On a recent 50-degree day, the banks of the Rifle were lined up with men, women, and kids all with fishing rods in their hands.
