Michigan’s ‘Omer Suckerfest’ is time for anglers to unite – and for white suckers to run

The man next to me, tending to a barrel smoker that was billowing smoke, handed me a piece of sucker on the end of a plastic fork – before I had even introduced myself.
That’s sucker season on the Rifle River. You don’t stay a stranger for long. Every spring, a stretch of river running through the small town of Omer, Michigan on US-23 becomes one of the state’s most underrated fishing destinations.
