First-time hunters flock to Wisconsin learn-to-hunt turkey program

Charlie Wanty was only a teenager when he shot his first turkey in 2004.
Twenty years later, his love of turkey hunting is stronger than ever and he is now president of the Waupaca, Wis., learn-to-hunt program that helps first-timers enter the sport. More than 30 novices were in this year’s program, held April 6-7 at Brooks Dairy Farm near Waupaca.
“I didn’t grow up in a hunting family,” Wanty said. “I started hanging with some buddies who liked to hunt. This program was an outlet to get into something.”

Lake Mendota offers quality fishery right in Madison, Wis.

As the largest lake in a metropolitan area of more than 400,000 people, Madison’s Lake Mendota draws plenty of anglers year-round.
There are a number of reasons for that, including a diverse fishery that includes everything from panfish to walleyes to carp to muskies to channel catfish. Anglers also have their choice of several boat landings and shore-fishing sites.

Trout Unlimited trout school helps Wisconsin students learn ‘on the fly’

Almost 50 years ago, Dan Harmon III had a vision of introducing people to the sport of trout fishing.
Harmon, a Trout Unlimited member from Oshkosh, Wis., who passed away last year at age 92, helped the Central Wisconsin Trout Unlimited Chapter start a fly fishing school with mentors showing students the ins and outs of a sport that can appear intimidating and complicated. That school now bears Harmon’s name, and is still going strong. The chapter held its workshop June 1-2 on the Tomorrow River at Riverside Bible Camp near Amherst.

Waushara County joins growing list of more CWD-affected counties in Wisconsin

The number of counties with cases of CWD-positive wild deer continues to grow in Wisconsin with Waushara County joining the list in April with a 3-year-old buck found dead in the town of Wautoma in February that tested positive for the disease.
The buck was within 10 miles of borders with Marquette and Portage counties and, as a result, the DNR renewed a baiting and feeding ban already in place for Waushara County. Marquette and Portage counties currently have a three-year ban in place from positive detections within each county, so the Waushara County positive test will not impact those counties.

White bass bring walleye anglers back to Wisconsin’s Wolf River

Wisconsin towns along the Wolf River recently saw a second surge of anglers chasing a spawning run, but this one was for white bass, not the better known walleye run.
Although walleyes draw anglers to small towns all along the Wolf River every spring, the white bass run that follows could bring in just as many visiting anglers to those towns – maybe even more.

Trout, anglers to benefit from project at Brainard’s Bridge Park in Waupaca, Wis.

An erosion control and habitat improvement project in a city park in Waupaca is a win-win for trout and anglers.
Work began in Brainard’s Bridge Park in March and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wrapped the project up in May.
Kyle Kossel, a habitat technician based at the DNR’s Shawano office, oversaw the project. A highlight of the park are bridges that provide access to a pair of islands.

Wisconsin’s Wolf River sturgeon spawn draws curious viewers

The Wisconsin DNR’s lead sturgeon biologist, Margaret Stadig, doesn’t mind getting up close and personal with a 100-pound lake sturgeon as she and other DNR sturgeon team members gathered April 15 at Bamboo Bend, a popular Wolf River sturgeon viewing spot on the east side of Shiocton, Wis.
Thousands of sturgeon make their annual spawning trip up the Wolf River from Lake Winnebago. Although most of them return to Winnebago or the upriver lakes after the spawn, others head upriver to the Shawano dam.

Who needs a boat? Anglers can find plenty of places to fish from shore

Expensive boats and fancy electronics are nice, but they’re not necessary when it comes to dropping a line for fish.
Take Wisconsin, for example. The Badger State is home to more than 15,000 inland lakes and ponds, thousands of miles of trout streams, hundreds of rivers, and shoreline on two Great Lakes.
How about Michigan, which has thousands of miles of Great Lakes frontage on lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie, hundreds of Great Lakes trout tributaries, and plenty of seldom-visited lakes in the Upper Peninsula.
And don’t forget Minnesota.
