Wisconsin spearers wrap up highly successful sturgeon season

The two words “short” and “sweet” describe the 2026 sturgeon spearing season on the Winnebago system, which shut down at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, after a 10-day run.
DNR Sturgeon Biologist Margaret Stadig called the season one of the best in recent memory.
“We still had pretty warm weather (on the Feb. 14 opener), but ice conditions at that time hadn’t deteriorated, particularly around the access points.”

Anglers track Wisconsin DNR’s work on northeast’s trout projects

DNR fisheries specialists have spent much of January and February updating the public on various projects and trends in northeastern Wisconsin.
One of a handful of meetings, held Feb. 3 at the Green Bay DNR office, focused on trout habitat and population trends in Oconto and Marinette counties.

Wisconsin’s Wild Rose hatchery bolsters Green Bay spotted muskie

The Wild Rose Fish Hatchery has been restoring and enhancing Wisconsin fisheries for more than a century.
Trout, salmon, sturgeon, and walleyes are all raised at the Wild Rose Fish Hatchery before being stocked in the state’s inland lakes, rivers and streams, as well as Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. The spotted muskie is on that list, as well.

Now a trophy destination, Wisconsin’s spotted muskies have spotty history in Green Bay

If there’s a species that deserves an award as Comeback Fish of the Great Lakes, the spotted muskie has to be considered a contender.
Green Bay has emerged in recent years as a trophy destination for the Great Lakes spotted muskie. The Wisconsin DNR spent three days at the Wild Rose Fish Hatchery in late October capturing spotted muskie fingerlings, loading them on trucks and stocking them in Green Bay, several of its tributaries and a few inland lakes in the Lake Michigan watershed.

Panfish rule the roost on Dunn County’s Tainter Lake in Wisconsin

A DNR survey of Dunn County’s Tainter Lake in 2022 confirmed what many people already knew: Algae is a major problem on the impoundment of the Red Cedar River just north of Menomonie.
However, that doesn’t stop anglers from targeting Tainter’s panfish and other species during the summer and winter.

Oconto County balsams decorate Madison for Christmas

He didn’t know it at the time, but a roofing project 40 years ago pointed Dave Vander Velden in a totally new direction – owning Christmas tree farms in Wisconsin’s Door and Oconto counties – that has paid off over the years and the fruits of his labor are on display in Madison.
The Wisconsin Christmas Tree Producers Association selected two balsam firs from Vander Velden’s tree farm near Gillett to be displayed in Madison in December.

Eau Claire chain draws anglers to Wisconsin’s Bayfield County

Wisconsin is dotted with popular lake chains, including the Eau Claire Chain, consisting of Upper and Middle Eau Claire lakes in Bayfield County and Lower Eau Claire Lake, which is split between Bayfield and Douglas counties.
The DNR last surveyed Upper Eau Claire in 2017-18 to assess its game fish populations, primarily walleyes and muskies. Meanwhile, the crews ran a creel survey on Middle Eau Claire in 2022-23.

Wisconsin’s Cloverleaf Lakes trail a lasting tribute to Pete Jensema

A hunting accident that paralyzed Pete Jensema as a teenager meant he needed a wheelchair for the rest of his life. That didn’t keep him from living an active life until he passed away this summer at age 56 from complications from a heart attack.
One of Jensema’s last achievements was to get the ball rolling on a handicap-accessible trail on Gibson Island near his home on the Cloverleaf Lakes in Shawano County, Wis.
