The two words “short” and “sweet” describe the 2026 sturgeon spearing season on the Winnebago system, which shut down at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, after a 10-day run.
DNR Sturgeon Biologist Margaret Stadig called the season one of the best in recent memory.
“We still had pretty warm weather (on the Feb. 14 opener), but ice conditions at that time hadn’t deteriorated, particularly around the access points.”
