Wisconsin DNR’s annual burning key to forest health, maintenance

Wisconsin residents have a new way to stay up-to-date on the DNR’s prescribed burning program.
An online dashboard on the DNR’s website lists information on the program, which consists of controlled fires to improve habitat, reduce invasive plant species, stimulate wildflowers and grasses, and control brush. The DNR launched the dashboard in 2021, said Michele Witecha DNR, prescribed fire specialist.

Northern Wisconsin muskie season to coincide with May 2 opener

Hwy. 10 divides Wisconsin into a southern and northern muskie zone. In the past, the Northern Zone opened the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Starting this year, with a rule change, the muskie season opens the same day statewide, the first Saturday in May – May 2 this year.
“Anytime we can simplify regulations, that’s a positive,” said Jordan Weeks, of the DNR’s muskie team. “Making things easier for folks is something we’re interested in. We’re not going to make something simple just to make it simple. It has to make sense biologically, as well, and this really does.”

Wisconsin’s Iola Conservation Club hosts first all-girl hunter education class

Teaching a hunter education class is nothing new for Scott Bestul, who’s been doing it for 40 years.
His latest class, held over five sessions March 10-19 at the Iola Conservation Club, turned out to be a first for the avid hunter and Conservation Congress delegate for Waupaca County. All 12 students are girls, which Bestul said hasn’t happened in any of his classes over his four decades of volunteer instruction.

Wisconsin Deer Hunters, Inc., looking for new chapters

A Wisconsin group that wants to promote deer hunting and outdoors-related activities is looking for new members and new chapters.
Chuck Dallas, of Shawano, is president of the Wisconsin Deer Hunters, Inc., Board of Directors and is past-president of the group’s Shawano chapter.
“The old-timers, when they created this thing in 1988, they were all involved in Whitetails Unlimited, wild turkeys and all that,” he said. “They were disappointed that they would work really hard as volunteers at these banquets and see the money leave the community.”

Brookies, anglers benefit from stream work in Wisconsin

Wisconsin’s Shawano County is home to more than 500 miles of trout streams.
DNR fisheries officials updated the public Jan. 20 on ongoing and upcoming projects in Shawano and Waupaca counties that will enhance habitat and fishing opportunities for trout – specifically brook trout – on some of those waters.

Wisconsin spearers wrap up highly successful sturgeon season

The two words “short” and “sweet” describe the 2026 sturgeon spearing season on the Winnebago system, which shut down at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, after a 10-day run.
DNR Sturgeon Biologist Margaret Stadig called the season one of the best in recent memory.
“We still had pretty warm weather (on the Feb. 14 opener), but ice conditions at that time hadn’t deteriorated, particularly around the access points.”

Anglers track Wisconsin DNR’s work on northeast’s trout projects

DNR fisheries specialists have spent much of January and February updating the public on various projects and trends in northeastern Wisconsin.
One of a handful of meetings, held Feb. 3 at the Green Bay DNR office, focused on trout habitat and population trends in Oconto and Marinette counties.

Wisconsin’s Wild Rose hatchery bolsters Green Bay spotted muskie

The Wild Rose Fish Hatchery has been restoring and enhancing Wisconsin fisheries for more than a century.
Trout, salmon, sturgeon, and walleyes are all raised at the Wild Rose Fish Hatchery before being stocked in the state’s inland lakes, rivers and streams, as well as Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. The spotted muskie is on that list, as well.

Now a trophy destination, Wisconsin’s spotted muskies have spotty history in Green Bay

If there’s a species that deserves an award as Comeback Fish of the Great Lakes, the spotted muskie has to be considered a contender.
Green Bay has emerged in recent years as a trophy destination for the Great Lakes spotted muskie. The Wisconsin DNR spent three days at the Wild Rose Fish Hatchery in late October capturing spotted muskie fingerlings, loading them on trucks and stocking them in Green Bay, several of its tributaries and a few inland lakes in the Lake Michigan watershed.
