Glenn Sapir: Shed hunting an opportunity to “deer hunt” after official seasons have closed

In the fall and early winter, hunters are looking for deer wearing an impressive set of antlers. In the months that follow, an increasing number of outdoorsmen and women are looking for those same antlers no longer attached to the bucks. Shed hunting has become a sport unto its own.
In fact, dogs are being bred and trained to find sheds. Hunters are even making long trips to deer hunting meccas to seek their shed antlers.

Glenn Sapir: A camping caravan for the ages

Four buddies on a camping trip. You might be able to relate to that kind of opportunity to spend time afield with friends. Four men made such an outing almost every year between 1915 and 1924, and in 1916 the journey took three of them through the Catskills and the Adirondacks in New York.
This might not seem noteworthy, except for who these men were. Three were American business magnates and the fourth was perhaps the most famous naturalist to live in the Empire State.

Glenn Sapir: You never know whom you might meet when you are a hunter and a fisherman

As the year approaches its end, it is a good time to take pause and be thankful for all whom we have enjoyed not only during these past 12 months, but also during the many years of our lives.
For me, it is family and friends, of course, with whom I am most intimate. I remember former colleagues and am thankful for congregants at my house of worship with whom I share a special meaning of the word “community.” Folks who have accompanied, perhaps even guided, me afield hold a special place in my heart.

Glenn Sapir: Some pocket knives have more lives than a cat

It’s said that a cat has nine lives. If true, that is impressive, but it doesn’t come close to the lives my pocket knife has. That little knife has been lost and given up for “gone” more times than I can remember.
Usually it goes missing for only a few days. I think two or three weeks may have been the longest period of time before it showed up again. I should realize by now that, just like a cat that always comes home, my knife, too, will reappear and come back into my life.

Glenn Sapir: Formula for longevity of oldest sporting club in the country could serve as a blueprint

On Sept. 28, outdoor enthusiasts will be observing National Hunting and Fishing Day, when anglers and hunters celebrate their heritage and the contributions they have made to wildlife, habitat and recreational opportunities as individuals and as organized sportsmen and women.
One organization in New York certainly has made its mark on that history as being the oldest continuously operating club in the United States.

Glenn Sapir: Florida’s winter fishing has this angler mid-summer dreaming

For many outdoorsmen, the action occurs in the three seasons other than winter. Those cold months might be when they long for those other seasons, perhaps even dreaming about them. I’m a little different. I do my dreaming now.
Yes, I love what spring, summer and autumn allow me to do outdoors, but I have been blessed to be able to enjoy virtually every day outdoors during the winter months. For the last few years my wife and I, in retirement, have spent February and March in a rental home in southwest Florida.

Glenn Sapir: Are bass tournaments facing discrimination with permitting proposal from New York DEC?

My brother Don is a nationally renowned labor lawyer, specializing in discrimination cases. But when it comes to the proposal to implement a black bass fishing tournament permitting system, Mike Cusano presents his concerns in a way that perhaps not even the best attorney could match.
Cusano, who lives in Clay, N.Y., is not a lawyer. He is a business analyst for Syracuse University, a fishing guide, a bass and walleye tournament fishermen and a sportsmen’s leader and advocate, serving for four years as president of the New York Bass Federation, president of the Salt City Bassmasters for nine years and currently chairman of the Onondaga County Fisheries Advisory Board.
