Glenn Sapir: A camping caravan for the ages

John Burroughs, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone and Henry Ford made several camping caravans using Ford vehicles such as this one on display at the Edison Ford Museum in Fort Myers, Fla. Ford, however, was unable to join his fellow Vagabonds on the 1916 caravan through New York. (Photo by Ray Sarracino, courtesy of Visit Fort Myers)

Four buddies on a camping trip. You might be able to relate to that kind of opportunity to spend time afield with friends. Four men made such an outing almost every year between 1915 and 1924, and in 1916 the journey took three of them through the Catskills and the Adirondacks in New York.
This might not seem noteworthy, except for who these men were. Three were American business magnates and the fourth was perhaps the most famous naturalist to live in the Empire State.
