Documentary highlights Minnesota’s Red River lake sturgeon recovery
The Minnesota DNR recently released a new 30-minute documentary called “Kings in the North: Lake Sturgeon Recovery in the Red River Basin.”
The video tells the story of decades-long efforts by Minnesota DNR fisheries biologists and their partners to restore the lake sturgeon population in the Red River of the North and its tributaries, known as the Red River Basin.

Michigan DNR encourages residents to report elk poaching incidents
Michigan’s first 2024 elk hunt is underway for those who were selected in this summer’s elk license drawing.
While the Michigan Department of Natural Resources wishes all hunters a safe, successful hunt, DNR law and wildlife officials encourage everyone to be alert to illegal hunting activity. Once considered extinct in the state by the late 1800s, elk now are a protected and highly managed species in Michigan.

Habitat diversity attracts birds and birders to Iowa River Bird Conservation Area
Driving slowly along the two-track, generously labeled “340th Street” by Google Maps, Anna Buckardt Thomas has her windows down and is identifying each bird by its call. “House wren, red-winged blackbird, killdeer, goldfinch, catbird, flicker, cardinal, Eurasian tree sparrow, common yellowthroat,” the state avian ecologist said.
This stretch of the Otter Creek Wildlife Area, in Tama County, Iowa, is an eBird hotspot; a popular birding website and app that logs bird sightings for users and adds each individual’s bird records to the global data set.

Conservation officer Joe Deppen honored as Shikar Safari Michigan Wildlife Officer of the Year
Michigan DNR conservation officer Joe Deppen was recognized as the 2023 Shikar Safari Michigan Wildlife Officer of the Year. The award, the highest state honor for conservation officers, is given annually.
Little Portage Wildlife Area improved through H2Ohio
As part of Gov. Mike DeWine’s H2Ohio initiative, the Ohio DNR (ODNR) has completed a new wetland restoration project at Little Portage Wildlife Area in Ottawa County. The project is intended to improve water quality while benefitting the surrounding communities and revitalizing the area’s ecosystem.

Ohio’s spring turkey season dates proposed to wildlife council
The Ohio Wildlife Council received proposals for the spring 2025 turkey hunting season dates in late August, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The council also received proposals to amend site-specific minimum-length requirements for walleye, sauger, and saugeye at several inland lakes.

Eight new natural resources officers start careers in Ohio
The Ohio DNR (ODNR) has eight new natural resources officers who were sworn in during a commissioning ceremony at Deer Creek State Park Lodge and Conference Center in mid-August. The officers completed their instruction as part of the seventh Natural Resources (NRO) Training Academy.
