Two environmental groups from Pennsylvania file a lawsuit over ‘nurdles’

Tiny plastic beads with a quirky name are at the center of a lawsuit that two environmental groups in Pennsylvania recently filed in federal court.
PennEnvironment and Three Rivers Waterkeeper are suing BVPV Styrenics LLC and its parent company Styropek USA, Inc., alleging that they are discharging wastewater and stormwater filled with polystyrene pellets, called nurdles, into the Ohio River and Raccoon Creek from their manufacturing facility in Monaca, Beaver County, in violation of the Clean Water Act.

Initial phase of deer hunts in two Pittsburgh parks goes smoothly

The harvest count in Pittsburgh’s first-ever controlled bowhunt is 80 deer as of Dec. 9, when the program was paused for an 18-day break until after Christmas.
Archery began in two city parks – 644-acre Frick and 288-acre Riverview – Sept. 30 and concludes Jan. 27. The 30 hunters chosen in the lottery-based initiative are required to harvest a doe before they target a buck and to donate venison from their first kill to a food-distribution charity.

Three shot during firearms deer season in Pennsylvania; no fatalities

Three hunting-related shootings occurred in the statewide firearms season that ended Dec. 9, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
The most recent happened in Bradford County Dec. 6 when a loaded firearm in a vehicle discharged causing shrapnel from the bullet to strike a backseat passenger, who was then transported to a hospital for treatment, said commission spokesman Travis Lau.

Dan Surra saw value in a Pennsylvania elk herd, played role in creation of PA Wilds

When Dan Surra looks back on his career in state government, he’s proudest of having helped to cultivate Pennsylvania’s iconic elk tourism industry.
“Elk were all anybody wanted to talk to me about when I got elected,” recalled Surra, of Kersey, Elk County, who left high school teaching in 1991 to serve in the House of Representatives as a Democrat representing the 75th District. The state’s elk herd was beginning to rebound, and Surra was among those who recognized its eco-tourism potential.

For local resident Jon Ebbitt, Pittsburgh city park hunt has been good experience

Jon Ebbitt, 42, spends a lot of time in Pittsburgh’s Frick Park with his wife and kids since the 644-acre green space is practically in his backyard.
As a lifelong hunter, he is keenly aware of the park’s over-density of deer, and its impact on park habitat.
“I used to think, they need to let archers in here, even for a day,” said Ebbitt, whose wish came true this fall when he earned a spot in a first-ever archery program aimed at thinning the herds in two city parks.
