Presque Isle State Park deer carefully managed in Pennsylvania

While Presque Isle State Park has one of the smallest deer herds of any state park in Pennsylvania, it is one of the most carefully managed.

Since 1989, the ecologically rich, 3,200-acre park encompassing the entire Presque Isle peninsula is open to regulated, controlled hunting in early December to maintain a herd of fewer than 20 bucks and does. This year’s hunt is Dec. 11 and 12, when most of the park, except for the Stull Interpretive Center, will be closed.

Hearing for alleged mega-poacher in Pennsylvania slated for Dec. 18

A Chester County, Pa., man accused of poaching dozens of trophy bucks with his two adult sons is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Dec. 18 in West Chester district court.
Carl Nelson III, 71, of West Chester, Carroll Nelson IV, 44, of Downingtown, and Mark Nelson, 40, of West Chester, were charged in September with a total of 71 counts involving the alleged illegal taking of deer in Chester and Delaware counties. Their arrests were the culmination of a two-year investigation that began with a tip from a concerned hunter in 2022.

Record number of wildfires seen in Pennsylvania this autumn

A record number of wildfires blazed across Pennsylvania this fall as drought gripped the state.
At least 701 fires burned over 2,085 acres and included nearly every county, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, which had issued a burn ban in early November. The Pennsylvania Game Commission and many counties followed suit.

No-harvest regulations will be lifted at Tamarack, Glade Run lakes in Pennsylvania

The New Year will bring new regulations to two popular western Pennsylvania fisheries.
On Jan. 1, the catch-and-release-only restrictions on Tamarack Lake in Crawford County and on Glade Run Lake in Butler County will be lifted, according to the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, which has banned harvest on both impoundments since they were refilled and stocked within the past seven years. They each had been drained more than a decade ago for dam rehabilitation or replacement work.

Growing drought conditions take hold across Pennsylvania

When water in the Youghiogheny Reservoir got low enough to expose a 206-year old bridge submerged underwater since 1944, curiosity seekers flocked to explore the Somerset- Fayette County, Pa., relic.
About 10,000 visitors showed up in recent weeks to investigate the Great Crossings Bridge – which was built in 1818 as part of the National Highway, and then flooded 125 years later for construction of the Yough Dam – prompting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to restrict public access, effective Nov. 8.

Pennsylvania biologists ‘stunned’ to find invasive western mosquitofish in Glade Run Lake

It appears that someone did a stocking of their own at the newly refurbished Glade Run Lake in Butler County, Pa., upsetting the ecosystem with an unwanted invasive.
Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission biologists were stunned to discover western mosquitofish – a small but voracious non-native prey species never before documented in Pennsylvania – during an electrofishing demonstration for a Glade Run Conservancy event in early October.

101-year-old Pennsylvania hunter has a ‘tremendous drive’

Pennsylvania’s Ray Swingle passed the one century mark Oct. 9 by shooting an eight-point buck with a 17.75-inch spread on the Susquehanna County farm where he was born.
He’d hoped to bag the deer on his 101st birthday a day earlier, “so I was a little disappointed,” Swingle said. “But he didn’t come out that night. He was late to supper.”
Swingle was hunting alone with a crossbow from one of several blinds on the 160-acre Union Dale property when he arrowed the buck from 20 yards away.

Walleye fishery booming in Pennsylvania reaches of Lake Erie

Lake Erie walleye anglers this year enjoyed the second-highest catch rates since 1996, according to the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission.
Catch rates from May through September averaged 1.71 walleyes per hour, which is more than double the 20-year average since 2004 of 0.7 per hour, according to Mike Hosack, a fisheries biologist with the commission’s Lake Erie Unit.
