New York’s Northern Zone turkey hunts have their challenges and rewards

One spring turkey season opener a few years back, I had spent the first two hours of the morning hunting a new and promising spot in the farm country of the Southern Zone. Because of the drive to get there, I didn’t roost any birds the evening prior, but my scouting efforts indicated plenty of turkeys in the area. 
That sunrise hunt turned out to be uneventful and as I sat on the edge of a big cornfield I could not help but let the inevitable urge to move overcome me.

A youth turkey tale that goes to plan in New York

A few days before the April 22-23 youth turkey hunting weekend, I headed for the hunting location in Washington County to put up a tent blind and do some quick scouting. It didn’t take long to find what I was looking for as I spotted three mature gobblers on the property. Between that sighting, and reports from the farmer who owns the property, I was confident my 13-year-old mentee, Josh Stone, of Hartford, might see some action.

SCOTUS denies Gazzola FFL case, lead ammo ban legislation resurfaces in New York

The Gazzola v. Hochul lawsuit, which seeks to provide New York firearms dealers relief from a number of provisions put forth by new gun laws passed last year, will not be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. In an April 21 ruling a unique Rule 11 petition that would’ve brought the case out of the New York City based Second Circuit court and moved it up to SCOTUS was denied.

While this WMA, paid for by sportsmen’s Pittman-Robertson dollars, is more about preserving habitat for predatory birds such as the short-eared owl, rough-legged hawk, northern harrier and other raptors, the hunter willing to walk to the more wooded sections of this 493-acre WMA may just find a spring gobbler or fall whitetail.

Mentor programs help kids connect during New York’s youth turkey season

Parts of New York’s annual youth turkey hunting weekend were wet, but it didn’t stop several young gobbler hunters, and their mentors, from participating in the hunt, held April 22-23.
Across the state, many young hunters, ages 12-15, were out hunting with mentors such as parents, grandparents, older siblings, other relatives or family friends. In other cases, they were part of a number of special youth turkey hunting programs that provided education and connected them with mentors.
