Best of 2025’s compound bows: Here’s what hunters should ‘target’ this season

Vertical bows used to almost always lead their advertising or sales pitch with how many feet per second the model pumped out arrows. Sure, the “need for speed” was, and remains important, but brands today seem content with about 350 feet per second. They emphasize, however, making their flagship models quiet, with reduced vibration, and more user-friendly.
This evolution makes a lot of sense because the models are still really fast, but a bowhunter doesn’t have to be an expert archer to shoot them.

Father’s Day gift guide for the outdoors dad who thought he had everything

Keep Dad safe when he’s entering or leaving the boat with Ezee Step’s sturdy and safe step system along with a grab pole that makes even launching solo a breeze. Skip putting on waders to navigate up slippery boat ramps and have peace of mind knowing that the ol’ man can land on dry, safe ground.

Here’s how to get the most out of your forward-facing sonar

Forward-facing sonar (FFS), while being a key tool in a growing number of anglers’ boats, is not exactly the magic bullet people (who don’t own a unit) think it is. It takes careful rigging, lots of practice, and needs to be fitted to an angler’s fishing style to really pay dividends.
Wisconsin’s Tommy Kemos is one of the most consistent walleye anglers anywhere and said his Garmin indeed helps him compete in today’s high-tech fishing world, but there are some keys to using the technology properly.

Top new lures for the 2025 open-water season

While forward-facing sonar certainly has had some criticism, it doesn’t mean that lure manufacturers aren’t acknowledging that they need to have baits that work better for it, and most of them are creating baits that can be “seen” better by the technology.
The good thing is these baits also work well for the angler who hasn’t joined the world of FFS. Here is a look at some great options to add to your tackle box as you head onto the open water.

Osceola ice fishing team wins high school’s third Wisconsin state title

The Osceola Chieftains ice-fishing team won its high school’s third Wisconsin Interscholastic Fishing Association State Championship on the Mississippi River in La Crosse during the Feb. 14-15 event.
The WIFA held its state championship on Mississippi Pool 7 and Pool 8 with 79 of WIFA’s 150 teams competing. Osceola’s high school anglers won their third state trophy by taking top honors with 527.25 inches of fish. That mark edged out Slinger’s 516.25 inches (second place) and Winneconne’s third-place finish with 506.75 inches of fish.

How to choose your next knife and how to keep it sharp

My dad used to say that only a dull knife would cut you, but I found out the hard way that that isn’t totally the case when I borrowed my grandpa Eli’s knife and attempted to whittle a stick and quickly sliced the top of my thumb.
Still, a good knife, whether in the butcher block on the counter or in a sheath on your hunting belt, is best used when it is as sharp as John Rambo liked them.
