Lawsuit against New York DEC, Delaware, and New Jersey targets Atlantic sturgeon commercial bycatch

Atlantic sturgeon were once very common along the coast, from Florida to Maine, but a combination of overfishing and habitat loss caused sturgeon populations to collapse. (USFWS photo)

Four affiliated parties, including Riverkeeper, Inc. and Tracy Brown, the Hudson Riverkeeper, on Oct. 24 sued the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, alleging that the DEC has failed to comply with the provisions of the federal Endangered Species Act with respect to Atlantic sturgeon.
The plaintiffs have brought similar actions against the states of New Jersey and Delaware.
