Legislative inaction leaves crab fishery unprotected in New York

The state legislature’s failure to extend the authority of DEC to continue managing commercial fishing for horseshoe crabs and other crab species has resulted in that authority sunsetting on Dec. 31. (Photo by NYSDEC)

An ongoing dispute with the New York legislature over the commercial horseshoe crab fishery has resulted in the Department of Environmental Conservation losing its authority to manage not only horseshoe crabs, but most crab species occurring in the state.
