Michigan Natural Resources Commission being sued over coyote season reduction, response expected soon

Michigan United Conservation Clubs and the Michigan Trappers and Predator Callers Association have filed lawsuits against the Michigan Natural Resources Commission over the closure of coyote hunting for three months stating in court documents that the decision was not based on “sound science” as required by the law.
The NRC voted in March to close coyote hunting from April 16 to July 14. The July 15 to April 15 period had been the traditional coyote season in Michigan until it was changed to a year-round season in 2016.

Bob Gwizdz: Last minute flush saves slow opening day of Michigan’s bird seasons

We’d all had enough before noon on opening day of Michigan’s grouse and woodcock seasons. The temperature was already into the upper 80s and we were gassed. The dogs were at least as beat, and the whole morning had been frustrating.
When we were exiting the truck to get started, Al Stewart took a few steps into the woods and flushed a quartet of grouse. Stewart’s my longtime, opening-day-of-bird-season partner, but we were hunting opener together for the first time since 2020.

Firearms no longer allowed at Michigan’s Windsor Township State Game Area

Hunters will no longer be able to use firearms at the Windsor Township State Game Area in Eaton County, Mich.
The 207-acre area is owned by the Department of Technology, Management and Budget but has been operated as a state game area by DNR under a memorandum of understanding since 2006. The game area is in a relatively urban setting and has been shrinking as DTMB has developed other uses for it.

Additional roosters to be released during Michigan’s 2024 hunting season

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the pheasant release program on state game areas for the upcoming hunting season will be very much like last year with one exception – there will be about 1,000 more roosters released compared to last year.

Cooperative effort removes tons of ‘problem’ sand from Michigan’s Au Sable River

The main branch of Michigan’s Au Sable River has a lot less sand in it after a three-week operation this summer employed pumps to moved it to nearby uplands.
The work, performed by Northpoint Fisheries Management and funded by conservation groups moved 240 cubic yards of sand, which was raising the water and covering important substrate, said retired Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist Steve Sendek, who ran the program.

Back in the ’80s, when I lived in Texas, I used to make annual pilgrimages to southeast Oklahoma or western Arkansas, to fish for smallmouth bass in the streams in the Ouachitas (which pass for mountains in that part of the world, sort of like the Porcupines do here in Michigan).
I grew up fishing for smallmouths and though there was some pretty good brown bass fishing to be found in Texas, it was typically in deep, clear-water, canyon-type reservoirs, not in streams.

Where’s the best fishing in Michigan? If you ask Jim Francis, the Lake Erie Basin Coordinator with the Department of Natural Resources, he’ll tell you point blank it’s in his watershed.
“I may be prejudiced,” said Francis, who recently made a presentation to the Natural Resources Commission’s fisheries subcommittee. “I grew up here and I live here and I work here. But we’ve got good water quality, good habitat, good management, and good fishing.”
And he has plenty of data to back up his assertion.

Bob Gwizdz: Michigan DNR funding source needs a new direction

I’ve been keeping my ear to the ground, vis-a-vis the license fee increase discussion, and all I’ve heard so far is… crickets.
This is not unusual as, I’m told, the folks involved are a fair distance from putting together an actual proposal and there’s no sense in angering up the blood before it’s necessary. Still, when these things happen, you often see a few trial balloons floated. But so far, none yet.
I am told there is a group within the Michigan Department of Natural Resources that is pretty convinced that our current model – funding game, fish and much of law enforcement through user fees – is irreparably broken.
