E-version of federal waterfowl stamp is now available

Taking a page from the playbooks of a number of states – including Michigan, recently – the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will begin offering electronic duck stamps for the upcoming migratory waterfowl season.
A number of states across the country already offer electronic hunting licenses, which are carried on your cell phone.

Bill reauthorizes Michigan’s pheasant release program until 2031

A pair of Michigan senators have introduced a bill to reauthorize the state’s pheasant release program on state game areas.
The current program, the Michigan Pheasant Hunting Initiative, in which the DNR contracts with the Michigan Association of Gamebird Breeders and Hunting Preserves to release roosters weekly during the season on 13 state game areas, runs through 2026. It will be extended until 2031 if the bill runs successfully and is signed by the governor.

Bob Gwizdz: Beating the brush is part of the experience when going after Michigan’s brook trout

There are guys who are bass fishermen and guys who are walleye fishermen and guys who are muskie fishermen, and though most of them will fish for other species given the circumstances, most will tell you they’re pretty true to their first loves.
Then there are guys like Chuck Emmert, who is a brook trout fisherman. And not just a brook trout fisherman, but a small stream brook trout fisherman. That’s an entirely different breed.

Electronic kill tags will be offered for fall turkey hunters in Michigan

In what is being viewed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources as a first step toward electronic harvest tags for game animals, the agency will begin offering electronic kill tags for the upcoming fall turkey season.
Fall turkey hunters will be able to buy turkey licenses through an app on their cell phone, and will not have to wait for a physical kill tag to arrive through the mail. They’ll be able to fill out the kill tag on their phones. Buying the electronic license will allow “ease of access,” explained Adam Bump, the upland game bird specialist with the DNR Wildlife Division.

Robust redear sunfish are moving the needle in Michigan panfishing

There are hundreds of lakes in Michigan where anglers can enjoy good to very good bluegill fishing.
But when Chris Freiburger and I met up for a couple of hours of worm dunking recently, we chose a small Jackson County lake that has solid bluegill fishing, but also has a bonus attraction: redear sunfish. Redears are similar to ’gills with one additional characteristic: They generally get bigger – they‘re longer and more shouldery.

Bob Gwizdz: Most of Michigan’s Deer Management Initiative recommendations won’t help deer herd

I’ve spent a lot of time poring over the conclusions of the recently completed Deer Management Initiative, but I’ll be darned if I can see what the hours of effort, expended in that exercise, actually accomplished.
Most of the recommendations that came out of it are rehashes of ideas that have been floating around for years. And not many of them are going to do much to move the needle toward responsible deer management. It’s more about what hunters want for themselves than it is about what’s good for the herd.

Michigan Legislature approves $1M for Traverse City fish passage

The Michigan Legislature approved a $1 million grant for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission to build FishPass, a facility on the Boardman River at Traverse City.
The new facility will replace the lowermost dam on the river, which was in danger of failing, but will also allow fish passage upstream. FishPass is designed to allow desirable species to get upstream, but prevent undesirable species – i.e. sea lamprey – from doing the same.

Bob Gwizdz: Is it time for a hunting, fishing license fee increase in Michigan?

You might not have heard much about it as the players are holding their cards pretty close to the vest, but the topic of potential license fee increases for Michigan hunters and fishermen is the talk of the conservation set in Lansing.
The Department of Natural Resources quietly is discussing the issue internally as well as with some conservationists. We all knew it was coming. Have you noticed the difference in the price of, say, a pickup truck in the past decade?

Cisco making a comeback in Michigan’s Saginaw Bay? Stocking efforts show positive signs

Efforts to rehabilitate cisco populations in Michigan’s Saginaw Bay are beginning to show positive signs, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which is leading the mission.
Ciscos, members of the whitefish family, have the potential to provide a recreational fishery as well as serve as forage for walleyes, and it’s thought they will help take the pressure off the bay’s depleted yellow perch population.
