Is it time for a longer tournament bass season in Michigan?

The Department of Natural Resources has long said that one of its goals is to provide recreational opportunities. Probably the best thing it has done for fishermen – and I really don’t know whether to credit the DNR or the Natural Resources Commission for this one – is to allow year-around bass angling.
It cost nothing, and I can’t even begin to guess how many hours of quality recreational opportunity it provides annually. It took a long time to get here.

Fishing slow on opening day for Michigan walleyes

While my partner Greg Sochocki was putting on his foul weather gear for the April 29 opening morning of walleye season, I noticed a fellow launching his boat alone. I walked over to the dock at the Rust Avenue launch ramp on the Saginaw River and grabbed his launch rope to give him a hand.
He was appreciative and announced that he was fishing alone because all of his buddies had decided to fish the Bay on the opener this year, but he wanted to fish the river because “it’s tradition,” he said.

Michigan DNR says no to expanding Camp Grayling

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has decided not to lease more than 160,000 acres of state forest land to the military as was requested by the Department of Military and Veteran Affairs for the expansion of Camp Grayling. But the DNR has left open the option for the National Guard to use about a third as much land for training exercises in the future.
Although the guard had guaranteed the proposed additional acreage would have minimal effect on the natural resources and the recreational usage of the land, the request was met by significant opposition from conservation groups and local citizens and government officials.

Is earn-a-buck to take a second buck necessary for deer management in Michigan?

Once a hunter takes their first buck of a season, you could make hunters kill an antlerless deer before they can kill a second buck. That would make sure that those guys who don’t like antlerless deer hunting have an incentive to kill one anyway. It’s what we’ll need to do if deer hunters want to avoid some of the unsavory solutions to an out-of-control deer population.

Should there be a slot limit for Saginaw River walleyes in Michigan?

Michigan’s newest fishing opportunity – keeping walleye season open year-round at the lower end of the Saginaw River – is a hit. Anglers have been flocking to the river during what used to be a six-week closed period and they’re catching plenty of fish.
I checked it out one day recently with veteran charter skipper Brandon Stanton and though it started slowly – the weather was brutal when we started, less than 20 degrees and the wind howling like James Brown – by the time we quit, mid-afternoon, three of us had put our limits (eight apiece) in the boat.

Michigan will increase its rooster release in 2023

The Department of Natural Resources plans to triple the budget for the pheasant release program this fall compared to 2022.
The birds will be supplied and distributed by Michigan Association of Game Bird Breeders and Hunting Preserves, as they have in the past. The plan is to release birds twice a week at most game areas in the program during the early part of the season (Oct. 20 to Nov. 14) and once a week during the December season. Releases will be random, not on a set schedule.
