Michigan NRC adjusting deer regulations that impact antlerless harvest, specialty hunts

Michigan bowhunters have gained antlerless deer harvest opportunity in the Upper Peninsula, and Liberty and Independence hunt participants can again target bucks.
Those two changes were approved earlier this month by the state Natural Resources Commission during its meeting at Lansing Community College. The Commission voted 4-1 (two commissioners missed the meeting) to open the entire U.P. to antlerless harvest by archers with a combo or regular deer license. Commissioner Dave Anthony cast the only vote in opposition.

Outdoor Observations: Here’s why Michigan’s federal funds for the outdoors has declined recently

A news story in the last edition of Michigan Outdoor News outlined the Michigan DNR’s federal appropriation from the Wildlife and Sportfish Restoration Fund.
I was awaiting a response from DNR, but it arrived too late for me to be able to add it to the story. One of the questions I asked is why Michigan’s total appropriation has declined in recent years (down $1.1 million from 2024 and down $5.4 million from 2023 to 2024.)

Michigan NRC approves waterfowl season framework for 2025

The state Natural Resources Commission, at its meeting in Lansing on April 10, approved the dates and framework for the 2025-26 Michigan waterfowl regulations.
A shortened early teal season and an increased pintail daily bag limit are the two major changes for the upcoming fall waterfowl season. Since waterfowl are migratory, they essentially are managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which sets framework for the states to work within.

Michigan Natural Resources Commission considers deer regulation changes

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission is considering two deer regulation proposals: 1. Removing the antlerless-only mandate from the Liberty and Independence hunts, and 2. allowing archery hunters to take an antlerless deer on a single or combo license anywhere in the UP.
These proposed changes were presented to the NRC earlier this month and are expected to be voted on by the commission at its May 8 meeting.
