Canada goose, squirrel kick off New York’s hunting seasons

A white-tailed deer season of change is about to get underway in New York, but first a handful of small game seasons get started beginning Sept. 1, which is also the date that New York’s new hunting and trapping calendar year begins.
With the exception of Long Island and the New York City metro region, every waterfowl hunting zone in New York has an early Canada goose hunting season that runs from Sept. 1-25.

A first-hand account of trying to obtain a 2026 Minnesota black bear permit

In 1992, I harvested my first black bear in Zone 31 near Babbitt, Minn. I was hunting with Mike Bisonette during his fourth year of guiding. I hunted hard for the first week but did not have any solid chances to draw my bow.
I returned the next Friday and hastily camped under the shell of my old Toyota pickup as storms pelted the fiberglass enclosure all night. I awoke to the same weather and spent my time wishing away the rain and lightning and noshing on canned chicken breast and crackers.

Understanding North Dakota’s ‘Private Land Open to Sportsmen’ program

What started as a visionary idea to bridge the gap between private landowners and public hunters has grown into a modern-day foundation of North Dakota’s outdoor heritage. I’ll remind old-timers (me included) that most hunters under age 40 have always known a hunting landscape with hundreds of thousands of PLOTS acres.

Commentary: Minnesota needs a citizen-led Conservation Council

Minnesota is surrounded by states that have a Citizens Conservation Advisory Council or conservation commission. It’s time for Minnesota to join them.
Why do we need such a council? Transparency in government is a national issue today. A council is essential to improving fish and wildlife management in the state and ensuring that informed Minnesotans are a part of the process. Our generation and especially future generations of Minnesotans deserve clean waters, abundant wetlands, fertile grasslands, and healthy forests.

Jack Ammerman: Pennsylvania’s Open Field Doctrine case, Michigan lawsuit could affect hunting privacy

In 1988, I was lucky in the fact that I drew a “doe tag” in Michigan. Back then, the opportunity to shoot a doe was a lot harder than it is now. I had never shot a doe with a rifle. Heck, I hadn’t even shot a buck with a rifle!
I was an avid archery hunter at that time and had plenty of kill tags punched, but come rifle season, all I ever saw were does. Getting that doe tag had me excited, as I love eating venison. Opening morning of the 1988 firearms deer season found me dragging a freshly harvested doe through some thick woods, across a dirt road, and another quarter mile back through the woods to my tent.
