The month of June is the best month of fishing of the season in Minnesota. Well, this hasn’t been the case as fluctuating temperatures really have messed up the bite.
As recently as 10 days ago we had water temperatures in the high 70s, some even pushing 80 degrees. Boom, here comes the change, and we now have dropped 15 degrees in water temperatures.

Located in Polk County, Maple Lake is the westernmost lake with any real significant fishing opportunities in northwest Minnesota’s Red River Valley. Minnesota’s elk population has been in the news, starting with the state offering 12 tags in 2026 to harvest animals in the northwest. The DNR currently has no elk coordinator, and efforts to create a new elk herd in the northeast have stalled thanks to a dispute between the Fond du Lac and Red Lake bands.
