Ryan Rothstein: An oversized, tight-lipped tom seems destined to rewrite the usual playbook

If I have it my way, by the time you read this, I’ll have punched my turkey tag. As it is, I’m ruminating on a gobbler that has me intrigued, and I don’t know that I have a great plan to get close to him.
I typically hunt Minnesota’s Season A unless we are still piled up with snow. Occasionally, I’ll slip into Season B. But rarely do I go much beyond that because I just prefer early season turkey hunting. Well, prior commitments and weather are not playing nice for me this year, so I’m staring down the third season as my go-to plan.

Mike Schoonveld: Making time – not finding it – is key for avid anglers

Are you one of those anglers who buys a fishing license every year – or, like me, several for different states? If so, you’re in the minority. Studies show most Americans who consider themselves anglers don’t actually fish every year.
That reality caught the attention of the sportfishing industry.

Steve Piatt: Early wakeups, late nights, and gobblers just part of the spring routine

There’s a certain rhythm to spring gobbler season in our household, and even our two Labrador retrievers join in, dutifully jogging out to their backyard kennel in the morning darkness, apparently able to distinguish between our camouflaged Remington shotguns and the Browning Citori 20 gauges that send them into a dancing, whining celebration, knowing a pheasant hunt awaits.

Pennsylvania’s Penn Roosevelt State Park is a little gem in middle of nowhere

At one point in the not-all-that distant past, Penn Roosevelt State Park was the scene of bustling summertime activity.
With a portion of Stone Creek dammed as its centerpiece, the lake was a destination of many people seeking relief from the heat of summer in its cool waters. Sadly, the dam was found to be unsafe, the water drained, but the park is still there.

Michigan researchers continue investigation of moose survival in the Upper Peninsula

It’s an unusually warm late-winter day in the western Upper Peninsula as a collaborative team of wildlife experts works to fit a radio collar around the neck of an immobilized moose and collect blood and fecal samples from the animal.
Speed and skill are crucial. Too much stress or time under anesthesia puts the 700-pound bull at risk.
