The season frameworks for the 2026 waterfowl-hunting season are virtually identical to 2025, according to the Minnesota DNR.
The only change is raising the pintail daily bag limit from two birds to three – a move that’s allowable under the 2025 interim harvest strategy established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
“We felt we were leaving some opportunity on the table,” said Nate Huck, DNR migratory bird consultant.

Two pale white heads appeared on the hillside not 20 yards below us, barely rising above the gooseberry bushes that choked the forest floor.
My hunting partner, fellow southeast Minnesota resident Jim Vagts, sat against a tree 10 feet away from me, trying to get a shot as the gobblers ducked and weaved through the brush while looking for the “sultry hen” that was calling them. Minnesota’s counties have cast their votes on whether to allow rifles or remain shotgun-only for deer season, and most are allowing rifles this fall.
After the Legislature eliminated the shotgun-only zone for deer hunting in 2025, counties in southern Minnesota were left to decide whether they wanted to remain shotgun-only or allow rifles. That process played out in county board rooms throughout the winter and early this spring.

The verified video of three cougar cubs in northern Minnesota last week qualifies as one of the biggest outdoors stories of the year. Social media chatter after the story broke ranged from amusing to conspiratorial.
Some folks insist that the DNR has been secretly concealing the presence of a legitimate cougar population, which seems odd given that the agency issued the actual press release about these cougars and the story went viral nationwide within hours. Others say that local folks have known about a wild population of cats for decades.
