Light attendance in Wisconsin’s Washington County spring hearing

Only 26 sportsmen registered at the Washington County April 13 spring fish and game hearing. That compares to 95 attendees in 2019, the last pre-COVID in-person hearing.
After presentations from the DNR, an election was held for two positions on the Conservation Congress. Larry Wehrheim was unopposed and was re-elected to a three-year term. Tashina Peplinski was unopposed and was re-elected to a two-year term.

On the ground with the public employees we too often second-guess

On August 12, 1986, during a microphone soundcheck for his weekly radio address, President Ronald Reagan said, “The nine more terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.”
The line was leaked to the press and quickly made national and international news.

Wisconsin NRB’s Rachel Bouressa discusses DNR budget in Waupaca County

Several advisory questions voted on at the Wisconsin DNR and Conservation Congress April 13 spring hearings dealt with ways to increase DNR funding for wildlife, fisheries, and conservation programs.
The newest member of the Natural Resources Board (NRB), Rachel Bouressa, of Royalton, attended Waupaca County’s hearing and shared her thoughts after the hearing with Wisconsin Outdoor News. Gov. Tony Evers appointed Bouressa to the board in 2024.

North-central Minnesota’s Clearwater River a ‘hidden gem’ for rainbows and browns

Gregg Eckman of Grand Forks knows how to read a trout stream, especially the Clearwater River which winds through the forests and fields about 15 miles northwest of Bemidji.
“The Clearwater River is kind of my home water,” he said. “I grew up about 10 miles north of it and I’ve been fishing it since 1976 or 1977. I caught trout back then and I usually can catch a few trout now.”

Let bluegills point the way to crappies this spring

I could see that they were bluegills rumpling the surface. I’d had cataract surgery the winter before and now my peepers were giving me 20/20 in both eyes. Miraculous.
A roving school of bluegills, not feeding but first-stage spawning, puts out a certain wave height, like a breeze-brushed surface. This school, about the size of a queen-size mattress, was making its way across the surface of this 100-acre lake.

Could the addition of ‘reefer trucks’ be a boost to Wisconsin’s venison donation program?

A Wisconsin Conservation Congress delegate believes he has an idea that will bring more venison into the state’s food pantries.
Bob Peterson, of Waupaca, submitted a resolution April 13 at the spring fish and wildlife hearings in Waupaca that addresses what he said is a lack of access to processors participating in the DNR’s Deer Donation Program.

Can curiosity kill a reluctant gobbler?

Sometimes a gobbler might know better, but his curiosity overcomes natural caution. Take the hefty tom bagged during the 2017 third season in Wisconsin as an example.
When the alarm jangled at 3:30 a.m. the wind was blowing hard, dark gray clouds hung heavily over the horizon, and rain drops had just starting to dribble. So, I did what any sensible person would do; I went back to sleep.

NRB’s Smith talks Wisconsin DNR budget issues at Washburn County spring hearing

Washburn County’s April 13 spring fish and game hearing was a little unique this year in having Shell Lake resident and Natural Resource Board (NRB) Chairman Bill Smith take the floor briefly to comment on DNR funding and fish and wildlife license fees.
“The simple question is how would you handle your personal checkbook with a 66% inflation rate? This (lack of license fee increases) has had a very significant impact on the DNR and the work they do since most of their budget comes from hunting and fishing license sales,” Smith said. “We need to find a way to get everyone involved in paying for managing our natural resources.”
