It’s not too often you hear of a bear with fur other than black being seen or even harvested here in the Upper Peninsula, but this season a group of hound hunters in the Western U.P. got a bear of a lifetime.
I met up Mike Sibley, his son – also named Mike Sibley – and Preston Allen to get the story of the hunt.

At 4 a.m., the Escanaba Marina was quiet. A full moon hung over the water, the air was warm, and Lake Michigan was unusually calm. Within a few hours, however, the quiet would be replaced by screaming fishing reels, king salmon peeling line, and a boat of grinning veterans.
That was my introduction to the fifth annual Bay Area Veterans Fishing Derby, hosted by the Bay de Noc Great Lakes Sport Fishermen’s Club in Escanaba, Mich.

“There’s pike all around that shore over there. There’s weeds over there but the water is high and you can’t see them right now. But there’s thousands of pike over there.”
As his father sets up the boat, 7-year-old Wyatt Ellsworth tells me about all the fish he has caught in this lake. I normally wouldn’t trust a kid to tell me where the fish are, but it just so happens that I have caught a lot of pike on that shoreline – mostly hammer handles, but a few over 24 inches. And when it comes to fishing, Wyatt knows a thing or two.

“What is your favorite type of fishing?”
It’s a question I often hear when I’m on a boat with other anglers or on the street when I meet someone new. It’s no secret that I love to fish, but I don’t get to fish as often as I would like. Work gets in the way, though most times I’m watching other people fish.

I remember the first time I saw a wild turkey in my corner of the western Upper Peninsula. It was about 20 years ago, and the giant bird was standing in the middle of a backroad in Ontonagon County. I stopped alongside of it and rolled my window down to get a better look.

Glancing at my own upcoming schedule, spring turkey hunting, spring trout fishing, and the walleye opener are top of mind for Michigan outdoorsmen and women.

What I enjoy the most about ice fishing is how accessible it is, or so I thought. You don’t really need a ton of gear – a sled, auger, a bucket to double as seat and fish hauler at the end of the day, hole scoop, jigging rod and bait should do it. And if you’re really serious, a flasher.
This minimal setup works great if you’re fishing the same little lakes that you can drive up to and walk a hundred yards or less to the same fishing hole that typically produces panfish.

It’s March in the Upper Peninsula – well over halfway through our winter season. Lake ice remains thick here, and we’ve had over two months of good ice fishing on inland lakes this season.
Ice anglers have been on the big lake bays for a while now. Still, I’ve only filmed two ice fishing stories this season. I’m slacking. But on a recent morning, I left my house at 5:15 a.m. to drive over 2½ hours east to Munising to film my third.
