Long Island shark fishing: Some anglers now catch sharks for science, not just for sport

Sportfishing for sharks got its start off the coast of New York about 75 years ago, after Montauk charter boat captain Frank Mundus realized that his customers were having more fun catching the sharks that they hooked accidentally than they had fighting the fish that they were actually trying to catch.
That was an important revelation, for in those days, offshore fishermen held sharks in low regard.

Winter also takes its toll on declining Illinois quail numbers

In most discussions of the decline in Illinois bobwhite numbers, we focus on long term loss of important habitats – including nest cover, brood habitat, food sources and shelter and escape cover.
Statewide, these long-term losses of critical habitat are far more important than the short-term fluctuations resulting from adverse weather conditions. But winter can be tough on quail.

Illinois Conservation Police Officer honored with NWTF ‘Officer of the Year’ award

Illinois CPO Amanda McKune issued 27 citations and 18 written warnings related to turkey cases across five counties in 2025 – this while handling illegal fish snaggers, state park violators and making DUI arrests.
As the National Wild Turkey Federation put it, McKune “is enthusiastic about her job and spends countless hours teaching young sportsmen and women about the department and how to be good stewards of the land.”

Commentary: New roughfish limit proposal in Minnesota is an unnecessary regulatory burden

Limits on walleyes, perch, sunfish, gar, mushrooms, and now roughfish demonstrates an overzealous micromanagement of the outdoors.
