Meet Laura Yeates… Bethlehem, Pa.’s ‘queen of the flatheads’

On the Delaware River, Laura Yeates rules.
At 41, Yeates, of Bethlehem, has caught enough big catfish to have earned the title Flathead Queen. It started about six years ago when the father of one of her son’s friends told her about the bite around Easton, where the Lehigh River meets the Delaware. Seeing a Facebook photo of a monster catch was enough to hook her interest, since she had only ever fished for trout, panfish and bass.

Lake Erie ice melting off while Ohio rivers warm some ahead of the walleye run

After a week of a historic thaw just after Valentines Day in Ohio, the Lake Erie ice that was an incredible 15-22 inches thick was severely damaged by the intense direct sun, some minor amounts of rain, and then strong winds.
When ice sheets separate, currents and wind allows the floes to break apart and drift away from the shoreline and into the open water to the east.

March and even into April the true test of winter survival for deer, pheasants

Early March often creates the impression that winter is nearly over.
Day length is increasing, snow begins to settle, and we can see the finish line of our annual winter marathon. However, it’s too early to assume pheasants and deer are going to win the race. Winter lingering on can impact wildlife survival – March and April can be the most demanding and deadly part of winter.

Minnesota DNR maintains 3-walleye bag limit for open water on Mille Lacs in 2026

Anglers on Minnesota’s Lake Mille Lacs will have the opportunity to harvest three walleyes starting on the fishing opener on Saturday, May 9. Harvested walleyes must be 17 inches or greater, with only one over 20 inches.
“We are pleased to keep the three-walleye limit for the open water season that was in place late last summer through the ice fishing season,” said Brad Parsons.

Steve Pollick: Dissecting the timing of when bucks shed their antlers

Imagine my surprise recently when reviewing overnight trail-cam photos, that a handsome little 6-point buck showed up several times near my mineral licks. A rack, still, in early March?
Late-shedding bucks, and this “sixer” clearly is one, always catch my attention. After all, we “know” that most Ohio bucks shed their racks in these latitudes in late December and January or sometimes into February. And we “know” that bucks usually shed or cast their antlers about the same time every year. But this late?

Hunters asked to help with the science of wild turkey genetics this season

During spring 2025, a state-of-the-art, hunter-assisted research project called wildturkeyDNA was launched to begin assessing population genetics of wild turkeys.
Created through a partnership between the Wild Turkey Lab at the University of Georgia, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited, the Low Country Game Bird Foundation, and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), wildturkeyDNA first focused on identifying the origins of unique and odd plumage patterns in wild turkeys.

Gretchen Steele: Turkey hunters and outdoor fans in southern Illinois can smell spring

By the end of February in southern Illinois, winter has worn out its welcome — but it hasn’t quite left. And here we are in March. More of the same, but with some hope attached.
The snow is mostly gone. The heavy gray skies are beginning to fracture into blue. Red maples along the creeks show the faintest blush of color. And yet, we are not fully delivered into spring. We are suspended — in mud, in wind, in want.
