Don’t make the mistakes most deer hunters make during winter

Most whitetail hunters put away their hunting gear once the season ends, and they don’t really think about deer again until the velvet bucks start showing up in mid-summer. The ones who don’t, often spend the winter scouring food sources and bedding areas for shed antlers.
A smaller subset of hunters keep their hiking boots out, and their scouting apps fired up and ready to go. They also tend to be the kinds of hunters who don’t leave a lot of their buck tags unfilled.

Tom Venesky: Habitat highlights late season rabbit hunt in Pennsylvania

Not everything struggles in the snow and cold.
After the rifle deer season ends in Pennsylvania, my shift turns to rabbit hunting with my beagles. For a few weeks, however, deep snow and frigid temperatures put a temporary halt on running the dogs, so my outdoor activity was relegated to walking across the white expanse with snowshoes instead. But while we waited – me and the dogs – for conditions to improve, I wondered how the rabbits would fare in the harsh winter conditions.

Commentary: Bag limits for Minnesota’s native rough fish better late than never

In 1875 the fish commissioners of Minnesota released their first annual report. They were wildly optimistic that whitefish would fuel a commercial fishing boom, if only they could eliminate the “vermin of the waters.”
Today it is amusing, if not bizarre, to read their disdain for the “egg devouring sturgeon,” pike, and “all cannibal fishes.” Reading those early fish commission reports you can’t help but shake your head and marvel at how much has changed. Except that, for one group of fishes, nothing did change.

Dead-of-winter archery practice is good for the mind and body

When my first arrow of the morning center-punched the bull’s-eye, I smiled then quickly took a picture and sent it to my son, Jason. The text wasn’t meant to gloat – rather, I was surprised that I was able to shoot so well. I jokingly told him that I considered stopping while I was ahead.
You see, in the past year, I’ve only shot my 20-year-old Hoyt bow a handful of times, and it felt good to once again be at full draw.
