Illinois budget has few lines for sportsmen

Illinois DNR offices that involve hunting, fishing and recreational shooting would see just a handful of new workers under the recently-proposed state budget.
Headcounts in the Office of Resource Conservation would go from 236 to 238, while DNR’s Office of Law Enforcement would adjust upward from 197 to 199. The World Shooting Complex would continue to have a single DNR staffer at the Sparta site.

Commentary: Now is the time to move forward with federal wolf delisting

After 35-plus years of contentious actions and no permanent action on federal wolf delisting, it is time to move forward. Wisconsin has more wolves in developed areas than any other location in the hemisphere. Wisconsin has the second highest wolf numbers of any of the states in the Lower 48.
In the 2023 BioScience publication, a professional article by L. David Mech and David Ausband was published. For those who do not know these two experts, they are university professors who have decades of research experience with wolves and wolf science.

Wisconsin’s sandhill crane hunt bill goes to Senate, while competing wake boat bills put on hold

A bill to enact a Wisconsin sandhill crane season passed by voice vote in the State Assembly on
Feb. 19 and moves on to the State Senate for consideration, while two bills addressing wake boat operation died.
It was a hectic and unpredictable day in the Assembly and Senate as a bill to create a sandhill crane season and bills regarding wake boat regulations – one favoring industry and one favoring local control – were debated and voted on.

Wisconsin spearers wrap up highly successful sturgeon season

The two words “short” and “sweet” describe the 2026 sturgeon spearing season on the Winnebago system, which shut down at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, after a 10-day run.
DNR Sturgeon Biologist Margaret Stadig called the season one of the best in recent memory.
“We still had pretty warm weather (on the Feb. 14 opener), but ice conditions at that time hadn’t deteriorated, particularly around the access points.”
