Ryan Rothstein: Are we shooting too many bucks? Few Minnesota hunters want to shoot does

There’s a doe on my main hunting property that brings a smile to my face every time I see her.
She’s definitely been around for at least four years, but you wouldn’t know how old she is just by looking at her. She’s a solid-sized animal, but not massive. She mostly blends in with the rest of the adult does. How do I know it’s the same deer?

Retired Wisconsin game warden recalls old crossbow case that ‘still makes his blood run cold’

Crossbows have given Wisconsin deer hunters an option that wasn’t always available. Over the years, a restrictive law that only allowed disabled hunters and hunters over a certain age changed to allow hunting with a crossbow being legal for anyone.
One retired Wisconsin DNR game warden remembers his first experience with a crossbow before the tool could be used by all ages, one he says still makes his blood run cold.

Mentored hunters under age 7 get deer, turkey tags in Pennsylvania

Game commissioners resolved an emotional issue at their Jan. 24 meeting when they voted 8-1 to adopt a measure allowing all mentored hunters – including those under 7 years old – to get antlered deer and turkey harvest tags with their permits, beginning in the 2026-27 license year.
The decision, intended to improve access to the mentored hunting program and expand hunting opportunities within it, is controversial among the hunting community. Many hunters are skeptical of very young children taking deer, and the issue has been called “tags for tots.”

Want to buy an island? One with unique history is for sale in Lake Erie

Anyone with an extra $5 million in their pocket (or bank account) and wants to own not only a unique Lake Erie property but also a piece of Ohio and national history, can now purchase Mouse Island.
The seven-acre island, located just off Catawba Island in the Western Basin of Lake Erie, went up for sale about six months ago. Current auditor records show it is owned by a yacht company, although there is no yacht company on the largely abandoned island. Realtor Kyle Recker, of Howard Hanna Real Estate, said the island is actually owned by John and William Mercer.
