Bird flu cases could increase in Northeast as migration raises risk

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reminds New Yorkers that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) continues to infect birds and mammals across the U.S. and Canada, including New York State.
With wild bird mortalities from HPAI increasing in late fall and peaking over the winter months, DEC said New Yorkers and other Northeastern states should continue to stay alert.

Two ice anglers die in northern Adirondacks

Two ice anglers died on Sunday, Jan. 18, when a snowmobile they were riding fell through the ice on Chaumont Pond, which is connected to the Oswegatchie River in the Town of Cifton, in St. Lawrence County, N.Y.
New York State Police said Bryan P. LaPlante, 33, of Newton Falls, and Michael J. Booth, 48, of Oswegatchie, were both found unresponsive in the water and later pronounced deceased at Gouverneur Hospital, shocking the small community in the northern Adirondacks.
