Missouri’s new elk herd not immune to poaching

Missouri’s elk reintroduction launched in 2011 and its first elk hunting season was in 2020 – but with success comes a downside.
As 2025 ended, Missouri Department of Conservation officials were still looking to identify who poached a bull elk in late November at Peck Ranch Conservation Area, one of the sites where elk were first released to the state.

Glenn Sapir: The big buck surprise arrives after some disappointment

They say even a blind squirrel finds an acorn, and this year, my acorn came in the form of a big-buck surprise.

It’s a question that hunters, anglers, hikers, birders, paddlers, and public land neighbors all wrestle with, even if we don’t always name it out loud. It’s that ever present elephant in the room.
