Streams of Thought: Minnesota deer kill numbers have always made headlines, even in D.C.

This headline, printed on wall tiles in a restroom at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. almost 10 years ago, is from the Star Tribune in 1967 and was short and to the point, saying "Deer Kill 130,000." "I’m sure it caused anyone unfamiliar with deer hunting to wonder if the whitetails were armed, , or if they merely created such widespread deadly havoc with hooves or antlers." quipped Spielman. Until there’s just a bit more finality regarding the results of Minnesota’s 2025 deer-hunting seasons, let’s for now settle for a brief update.
As of earlier this week, with a “CWD hunt” on tap, a portion of the muzzleloader season remaining, and the archery season continuing until year’s end, the deer harvest had pushed past 177,000 – about 7,000 dead animals greater than last year’s take.
