Winter trout-fishing options are ample across Minnesota

There’s lake trout fishing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and elsewhere – even on Lake Superior if Mother Nature turns her frigid best and makes enough for ice for anglers in and around Duluth and Two Harbors. There are the state’s so-called stream-trout lakes that have grown in popularity in recent years.

Unfilled tag? Tips for tracking the late-season deer food code

Late-season archers seeking whitetails have their work cut out for them. Deer have become extremely wary after eluding hunters for the past few months. In addition, weather conditions encountered during late season can often be brutal, putting even the most diehard hunter to the test.
But by taking advantage of a few weaknesses in a whitetail’s armor, hunters still hoping for venison can expect a reasonable chance of finding deer.

Hard water has arrived: Don’t miss this golden opportunity to catch walleyes

On many lakes and reservoirs, the early ice time frame provides one of the best periods for catching walleye through the ice. The early ice period in fact continues trends from fall fishing.
For simply connecting the dots and landing on walleyes right away at early ice, one of the best strategies is circling back to the best locations or lakes that were productive a few weeks ago. Breaking down locations even further, some of our favorite early ice locations fall into a handful of characteristics.

Floating wetlands in Illinois’ Lake Decatur aiming to improve water, habitats

As winter approaches, the durability of two new floating wetlands in Lake Decatur will be tested. The man-made structures were installed on the lake this summer with the goal of improving water quality and creating a habitat for wildlife.
Susan McIntyre, an ecologist with the Illinois Natural History Survey, said man-made wetlands can provide similar benefits as natural ones.
