Investments to conserve, restore, and manage fish and wildlife pump billions into the economy, fueling jobs, powering the $1.1 trillion outdoor recreation industry, and rivaling major U.S. sectors.
A new report, “Conservation Economy in America: A Snapshot of Total Fish and Wildlife-Associated Direct Investments and Economic Contributions,” reveals that fish and wildlife conservation generates substantial economic benefits.

Minnesota’s deer harvest surpasses state’s total from 2024; Wisconsin also ahead of last year’s pace

With a muzzleloader deer-hunting season that continues through Dec. 14, an archery season through Dec. 31, and a late “CWD season” for certain zones set for Dec. 19-21, whitetail harvest numbers will increase in Minnesota.
But as of earlier this week, the state’s hunters already had surpassed the kill from a year ago.

Prison butchering program helps with Ohio’s surplus deer

In a cooperative agreement signed on Sept. 24 between the Ohio DNR (ODNR) and the Ohio Penal Industries (OPI) at the Pickaway Correctional Institution, participating incarcerated adults received specific training on processing deer to be donated for distribution from local food pantries.
For the time being, the only deer being accepted at OPI are those that come from those procured by the ODNR Division of Wildlife biologists and other government culls.

Commentary: Diversity may kill us as hunters, anglers and trappers if we fight about our differences

Hunting, trapping, and angling have a diversity problem. Not the kind you’re probably thinking but the sort on the bumper stickers I used to see as a kid: “You Bet Your Dupa I’m Polish.”
Ask any hunter, angler, or trapper how they see themselves, and the response is rarely generic. Chances are they’ll self-identify as deer hunters, fly-fishers, waterfowlers, beaver trappers, grouse hunters, or predator callers. I suspect you get the drift.
