Prison butchering program helps with Ohio’s surplus deer

Statewide, approximately 1,100 incarcerated adults are now taking part in various skilled trades training that in addition to meat cutting includes heavy equipment operators and welding among other trades. In a cooperative agreement signed on Sept. 24 between the Ohio DNR (ODNR) and the Ohio Penal Industries (OPI) at the Pickaway Correctional Institution, participating incarcerated adults received specific training on processing deer to be donated for distribution from local food pantries.
For the time being, the only deer being accepted at OPI are those that come from those procured by the ODNR Division of Wildlife biologists and other government culls.
