Ralph Loos: Illinois deer and turkey hunters both facing a numbers problem

For 16 or 17 years in a row, I’ve gotten the same phone call from 16 or 17 different deer hunters just before the gun season.
“You’re always writing about how good of shape the Illinois deer herd is in, yet I haven’t seen a deer under my treestand in three years,” is how the call usually goes – give or take a year or two since the last time the hunter on the other end of the line saw a deer under his or her treestand. They’re not exaggerating, this I accept, because there are patches in the state where deer remain scarce.

New York fifth grade students exposed to the outdoors on annual field trip

On a warm, early October Friday afternoon more than a dozen fifth grade students from the Granville Central School in Washington County were learning how to fish along the shores of a small pond at the Hudson Falls Fish & Game Club.
With the help of their teachers and mentors like local sportsman’s advocate Rick Vladyka and 2023 NYON Person of the Year, Bill Pike, they were catching bass and panfish out of the pond.

Patrick Durkin: Wisconsin bear hunters record a ‘very average’ year

Wisconsin’s bear hunters bagged 3,724 bruins during the 35-day season, a 16% decline from 4,432 in 2024, according to preliminary data. Though the overall kill also fell 8.6% short of the 4,075-bear harvest target for this year’s season, it was within 2.6% of the five-year average of 3,824 registered during the 2021 through 2025 seasons.
