Webinar updates public on chronic wasting disease in New York

Big game experts from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation held an information webinar on chronic wasting disease (CWD) on Oct. 16.
After a brief overview of the disease by Kevin Hynes, biologist with DEC’s Wildlife Health Unit, Natural Resources Supervisor Andy Macduff with Region 6 got right into the fact that CWD was confirmed on Oct. 24, 2024 in a captive red deer in the Town of Columbia in Herkimer County. Dan Ladd: Looking into the factors that dictate a hunter’s harvest choice

A few editions back our online poll queried bowhunters on what they desired to harvest for an early season deer. This included mature bucks, antlerless deer, any buck or any deer.
The results weren’t surprising: any buck, 15%; mature buck, 46%; antlerless deer 15%; or, any deer 24%. If anything, they raised more questions about the attitudes and desires of all hunters during all seasons.
