Archery, firearm shop owners keeping Wisconsin hunters afield

Early harvest numbers from the archery deer season aren’t available yet, but three northeastern Wisconsin businesses are shedding a little light on how hunters are faring so far.

“As of Oct. 27, a lot of people were shooting bucks already,” said Brock Smejkal of Butch’s Archery & Outdoor Sports, located between Clintonville and Shawano. “A lot of people say Halloween’s the best time to hunt. They’ll start moving during the day. They’re just starting to chase the does around, but bucks are also hitting scrapes.”

Commentary: And we call it deer hunting

There comes a time in mid-November, weeks after the kaleidoscope of color has faded, when my thoughts turn towards steely gray skies and drab woods hopefully coated with a few inches of fresh snow.
Towards other like minded folks, some whom I may not have seen since last year’s November gathering, but whose company feels as comfortable as a favorite recliner. Towards the coming of those nine special days that in many ways give the rest of the year meaning.

How to target the bucketmouths of November

For most Minnesota anglers, bass are the boys of summer. Think bass and you think muggy mornings and long, sun-shot summer evenings. Topwater frogs in the lily pads, or deep weed edges and crankbaits when the sweat is dripping off your elbows. That’s bass fishing. But late fall? That’s for walleyes and muskies.
I get the skepticism. But late fall bass fishing has a few things going for it.

New York’s Region 5 landowners missing out on DMAP permits

For several years John Dixson – a farmer, landowner and hunter in New York’s Southern Washington County – has utilized the state’s Deer Management Assistance Program to help keep white-tailed deer populations in check on his farmlands in Easton.
Dixson, however, said he was caught off guard this year as his DMAP applications were denied and it was suggested that he rather enter the state’s Deer Damage Permit (DDP) program, also known as “nuisance” permits.

Dominate the night with thermal hunting optics

Night hunting has undergone some significant changes in the early decades of the 21st century thanks, in large part, to the advancements in thermal and night vision optics.
We’ve gone from hunters slogging through cornfields and woodlots following behind hounds aiming to bag a treed raccoon using a powerful light and a .22 rifle or handgun, to targeting feral hogs and coyotes with centerfire rifles at distance.
