Rend Lake Resort progress key for Illinois anglers, hunters

A once-popular southern Illinois destination for anglers and hunters from northern parts of the state is expected to reopen in 2027, a progress report by DNR and area lawmakers suggests.
Rend Lake Resort, originally opened in 1990, closed in December 2016 due to issues with mold, health concerns, and lease payment delinquency. The resort, located on the shores of Rend Lake at Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area, had been falling into disrepair for years before DNR terminated the lease with the resort’s operator on Dec. 18, 2016.

Uptick in rabbits, quail have Illinois hunters optimistic

Suggesting a turnaround in the upland game arena in Illinois is being a little overly optimistic, given the decline of cottontail and Bobwhite populations over the past three decades. But Don Kahl, DNR’s Agricultural and Grassland Wildlife Program Manager, did bring sprinkles of good news and dashes of hope to rabbit, quail, and pheasant hunters when he shared the 2025-26 Upland Game Forecast earlier this month.

Statewide survey shows Illinois deer hardly camera shy

Deer are by far the most common animal caught on camera traps in an ongoing statewide survey that has provided several rather unusual glimpses of Illinois’ wildlife.
Researchers have seen a female bobcat and her yearling trying to cross rough waters after severe flooding at the bottom of the state. They’ve also observed a female opossum carrying four young on her back.
