43-1⁄2-inch muskie wins Treeland fly-fishing event in Wisconsin

The 10th annual Treeland Premier Musky Fly-Fishing Championship drew 100 enthusiasts from around the country to the Hayward, Wis., area Sept. 26-27 for three days of competition, camaraderie, and fundraising.
A fly-casting contest kicked off the event, with Jonathan Small winning top honors and a Chippewa River Custom 12-weight fly rod. High pressure both days made for challenging fishing, but contestants registered 38 muskies ranging from 25 inches to 471⁄2 inches.

Largemouths and smallmouths in a short sprint from Ohio to Michigan

St. Clair Shores, Mich. —“I’m going to do some R & D tomorrow. Meet me at the 9 Mile ramp at 8:00 if you want to go.”

While better known for walleyes, perch, and smallmouth bass, Lake Erie harbors a healthy green bass population that can be found in marinas and on breakwalls that line its extensive shoreline.

The new wolf advisory committee convened in October for its second meeting, trying to navigate one of Wisconsin’s most divisive wildlife management issues. While the committee doesn’t make final decisions, its work will help shape the framework for a future wolf season, should the species ever be federally delisted.
