Doe decoys during the rut: How to give bucks what they want to see

Have you ever wondered why, in most of the hunting content you see in which a deer decoy is used, almost always it involves a buck decoy?
There are a couple of reasons for this. The first is that buck decoys became the standard a long time ago, and that trend hasn’t changed much. The second is that most hunting content is filmed on primo ground with plenty of big bucks that won’t shy away from scrapping with an interloper.

Ohio’s Outdoor Trailblazers: Eunice Koebel’s secret to great wildlife photos? ‘Click like crazy’

Eunice Koebel is an unassuming, retired elementary music teacher who has a long-time fascination with bald eagles.
She also has learned to make exquisite images of the great raptors – America’s national bird and symbol since 1782 – and other large birds such as various hawks, sandhill cranes, turkey vultures, great blue herons, and common egrets.

Michigan bowhunter kills 500-pound U.P. black bear

Taxidermist Raymond Caswell from Escanaba killed one of the biggest black bears taken with bow and arrow in Michigan during 2025 seasons.
The bruin he arrowed on the evening of Sept. 16, 2025 in Delta County while hunting over bait had a dressed weight of 443 pounds and an estimated live weight over 500. It was the first bear he tagged.

Researcher examines origins of blufflands bobcats

As the so-called “Driftless” or bluff-country region that covers potions of four states has seen increasing bobcat populations, an Iowa researcher is trying to learn more about its origins. Did the bobcat population of southeast Minnesota, southwest Wisconsin, northeast Iowa, and northwest Illinois naturally exist or move in from somewhere else?

Bob Gwizdz: How many flushes does it take to kill a grouse?

My buddy Jeff Greene, a retired wildlife biologist who shows up in this space from time to time, once told me that he’d read somewhere that it takes 12 flushes to kill a ruffed grouse: three you don’t see, three you see, but are out of range, three are within range but are somewhere you can’t shoot them, and you’ll shoot at three of them and kill one.
And while that formula may hold in some places, some times, it’s not how I’ve found things over the past couple of years in early October in Michigan.

Tom Venesky: George Slinzer — a legend of the archery world who shouldn’t be forgotten

George Slinzer passed away in 2001, and to many who knew him he was simply the caretaker for a small borough in Luzerne County, Pa.
But in the world of archery, Slinzer was a giant. Ten years ago, when I covered the outdoors for a daily newspaper, a reader called me wanting to know if there was any interest in doing a story on Slinzer. I admittedly never heard of him. That’s one reason why I wanted to do the story back then, and also retell it today.
