Sick of hunting crowds? Here’s how to have some waterfowl to yourself

There is a near-constant refrain in the hunting world these days, and it goes something like this: “There are too many people out here.”
You’ll hear that out West if you travel in pursuit of elk, mule deer, or antelope. You can hear it much closer to home, too, if you try to hunt deer or upland birds on public land. And you’ll hear it at any number of known duck hot spots.

Wisconsin 8-year-old tags 524-pound bear

A young hunter from Luck continued a family tradition by punching his black bear tag with a 500-plus-pound bruin.
Rhett Swenson, 8, a third-generation bear hunter, said his “Papa”– grandfather Jeff Holdt of Luck – started trailing bears with hounds in 1989, the year his mom, Aalyssa, was born.
“His first year hunting, he got a record bear weighing 628 pounds live,” Rhett Swenson said. “The luck then continued in 2021 when my dad got a 515 live (bear).”

Here’s how to make small deer drives in big timber

Our hunting crew, the Iron Sight Gang, had some serious plans for the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
What is typically a productive time in the woods for us would feature eight or 10 hunters putting on two, three or maybe even four deer (and perhaps bear) drives over some rugged, but certainly accessible public land hills and swamps in the eastern Adirondacks. But when we gathered that morning at a roadside pull-off, there were just five of us. For one reason or another, there were drop-outs.

Pennsylvania reader stories: A father’s hunting rifle returns to his favorite spot

Forty years tend to cloud one’s memory but it had to be 1984.
That was the year I was raising three boys, my wife was pregnant with our daughter. I was working second shift and building a new house. But I had no excuse to oversleep during any day of Pennsylvania’s two-week rifle “buck” season. Especially on the morning I was to meet my father, John, in the parking lot of State Game Land 42 in Westmoreland County.

Browning Auto-5 helped shape the future of the firearm industry

Growing up in northwest Ohio, I looked at what the adult hunters carried, often it said something about how serious they were. If you had the means, or if you simply lived to hunt, somehow you would find a way to buy one.
Not just any shotgun, a “Recoil Operated Firearm.” That is how it was described on the patent application. The common names reflected the era and geographic location you were in: Browning, Automatic Five, Auto-5, A5, or Humpback.

Bob Gwizdz: Michigan’s proposed spring turkey regulation changes make sense

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has recommended some of the most significant changes to spring turkey season since almost ever.
The Natural Resources Commission is expected to act on the recommendation at its Nov. 6 meeting in Lansing. The recommendation has four goals: to simplify regulations, streamline procedures, improve hunting opportunities, and protect the wild turkey population, said Adam Bump, the DNR’s upland game bird specialist.

Fine tune your straight-walled cartridges for better accuracy this deer season

My confidence in handloading straight-walled cartridges does not shield me from the occasions when I expect results sooner. If load development is slow in coming together, my mind reaches for reasons why.
Some recent trials and tribulations are a prime example.

Commentary: What does science say about population effects of lead in wildlife?

Concerns over the effects of spent lead ammunition prompted federal resource agencies in the United States and Canada to phase in a ban on lead shot shell ammo for waterfowl hunting starting in 1987. Now, the focus is shifting towards the effects of spent lead centerfire ammunition. Wildlife veterinarians, bird advocacy organizations, animal rights activists, and even some wildlife biologists assert that it’s “common knowledge” that lead is bad from a population perspective.
One might ask: What’s the evidence?
