Outdoor Insights: Is it time for Minnesota to host a limited state moose hunt again?

A letter writer recently addressed a topic that many sportsmen ponder: Why do three Chippewa tribes kill several dozen moose every year while state hunters kill zero?
First, a recap of Minnesota moose history. Forty years ago, we had two distinct regions with large, huntable populations of moose — the northwest and the northeast. For reasons that remain unclear, the northwest population crashed first with the DNR canceling hunting there in 1997.

For Minnesota duck hunters, patience is again a must

Minnesota duck hunters waiting for sustained cold weather and north-to-northwest winds to jump-start a largely stagnant autumn waterfowl migration are going to have to be patient.

Fifteen years ago this month, I brought home a wiggling, charismatic puppy named Cali. She changed our lives for the better, but as all longtime dog owners understand, we were ill-prepared to say goodbye when her number was called.

Will Ohio’s deer gun hunters come close to matching a near record harvest from last year?

The stars couldn’t have aligned much better for hunters during last year’s deer gun season in Ohio.
The weather for the weeklong gun hunt in late November was near perfect and for the first time the ODNR Division of Wildlife made the Deer Management Permit valid through gun season. What resulted was a near record gun season harvest.
