For the second time this year, a white-tailed deer has tested positive for rabies in New York, and recent reports say the animal interacted with a raccoon, a species that is a more common carrier of the disease.
On Sept. 26, a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police Officer (ECO) responded after a deer had reportedly ran into a school building in Copake, in Columbia County. Basic precautionary measures were taken and the animal was euthanized. Rabies can only be detected by examining the brain of a potentially infected animal.
