Wisconsin Roundup: Clearing up any confusion on turkey hearing; and bears producing many cubs

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) will meet Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 8:30 a.m. at the DNR’s headquarters in Madison.
During the proceedings, the DNR will ask NRB members to approve several scope statements that will allow the agency to hold preliminary public hearings, with comment periods, on several topics. Items 2E and 2F deal with turkeys and migratory birds, respectively.

Broken down on the water? Erie Canal towing a continuing and traditional service

When the Erie Canal was created 200 years ago, canal boats filled with commercial goods and passengers were pulled down a tow path by a team of mules. This became a common occurrence along the 363-mile-long canal system.

While many of the boats include personal watercraft like canoes and kayaks, there are still a significant number of power boats that utilize this unique transportation system – and that means there’s a chance of having a motor (or boat) issue.

At the halfway point of 2025, DNR and partner agencies had removed about 46 million pounds of invasive carp from the Illinois River.
That large number is the total haul that came from two removal projects on the river this year. It suggests a couple of things: carp populations are growing, and those working to capture them are  getting better at the job.
