Doug Leier: Poaching is theft; here’s how to help stop it in North Dakota

Even if you’ve never been a hunter, you’re likely familiar with the term poaching. Poaching is theft, plain and simple. It’s the illegal taking or killing of fish and wildlife.
It’s stealing from legal hunters and trampling on the public trust. It might be shooting before legal hours, fishing without a license or shooting an extra deer, duck or pheasant. The first few issues of poaching I witnessed in my time as a game warden are etched in memory.

Pheasant season zone expansions, changes lead to more opportunities for Michigan hunters

As usual, pheasant season opens Oct. 20 in southern Michigan, but there are a few changes this year that should lead to increased opportunity for sportsmen.
The biggest change is that all of Zone 3 is open for the entire season this year. When pheasant season was expanded to include December, the boundaries were set so some parts of Zone 3 were not included, mostly in the southwestern part of the state.

Steve Piatt: Even where there’s lots of moose, there still isn’t many

An old Newfoundland moose-hunting guide said it best, and in simple fashion so typical of these hard-working folks, when talking about the potential for success on any hunt:
“Even where there’s a lot of them, there ain’t many of ’em.” He was right, but that’s a tough sell to a visiting hunter full of optimism.

Minnesota DNR skeptical about algae harvesting to eliminate blooms

Growing up in Lake Crystal, Minn., Mike Roll remembers swimming and enjoying the splendor of the town’s namesake – Lake Crystal.
Once he had children, he wouldn’t let them swim in the lake’s waters.
“In my lifetime … my lake has been destroyed. So, in my mind, I was like, well, how many others have been destroyed that other people’s kids will never get a chance to use them?” Roll said.

Great Lakes’ burbot in a state of semi-peril

The burbot is a species of fish that only a fraction of Ohio anglers have ever heard of, much less caught, even though they are widely distributed from Maine to Alaska, including many lakes in Canada.
Closer to home, they are found in all of the Great Lakes and throughout many lakes in the Upper Midwest. Michigan fisheries staff are concerned that fishing pressure on this fish combined with diminishing food sources are pushing numbers lower in multiple locations.

Survey demonstrates outstanding popularity of U.S. Wildlife Refuges

From birders to goose and deer hunters to walkers and hikers, people flock to the nearly 11,300-acre Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Ohio, sandwiched between Toledo and Port Clinton along Lake Erie.
And while Ottawa – as it is typically referred to by hunters and birders – is Ohio’s only National Wildlife Refuge, it’s far from the only one in the system.
