Michigan venison donation program serves record number of meals to those in need

Hunters Feeding Michigan – a Michigan Department of Natural Resources program connecting donors, wild game processors and charities to help feed those in need – processed 140,000 pounds of donated venison during fiscal year 2025, which ended Sept. 30.
That equates to more than 560,000 servings of venison and sets a new annual record for the program.

Trump approves Ambler Road project through Alaska wilderness to boost copper, zinc production

President Donald Trump on Monday, Oct. 6 ordered approval of a proposed 211-mile road through an Alaska wilderness to allow mining of copper, cobalt, gold and other minerals.
The long-debated Ambler Road project was approved in Trump’s first term, but was later blocked by the Biden administration after an analysis determined the project would threaten caribou and other wildlife and harm Alaska native tribes that rely on hunting and fishing.

Fall community trout stocking starts October 23 in Iowa

Eighteen lakes across Iowa are gearing up to receive trout this fall. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will release between 1,000 to 2,000 rainbow trout at each location as part of its cool weather trout program that brings trout to areas that cannot support them during the summer months.

New York DEC hits cheese factory with $475,000 fine for polluting Ischua Creek

A major wastewater discharge from the Great Lakes Cheese plant in August that caused a widespread fish kill in Ischua Creek was seemingly the worst since the facility began operations in late 2024.
But it wasn’t the first. Records from the Environmental Protection Agency show the company self-reported numerous violations of its wastewater permit as early as December 2024, almost immediately after the Cattaraugus County facility began its cheese-making operations.
